Yale 1: Tom in the Library

My brother, my father, and I took a little side trip this week to New Haven, CT to visit the Yale campus. My father and I had never seen it. It's quite amazing. The majority of the buildings are done in a gothic style, which I love. The main library is modeled specifically after a cathedral. This is my brother in the library.

Manchester, N.H.

I went to Manchester this week, where my mother, father, and one sister live. My mother has been in the hospital following a heart attack and she took a turn for the worse recently. She seems to be getting better now. While there, I had some good times with my father and brother.

Inside the Tabernacle on Easter

I was invited to be a guest at today's Easter thingamajig at the LDS tabernacle. It was a rare event in that one of the 12 apostles was speaking. It was kind of long, but a good overall "cultural" experience.

Walk a Mile in Her Shoes

Today I participated in a fundraising event for SAAVI, an organization for the prevention of sexual violence against women. It involved guys in high heels walking a mile, yelling, and collecting money from people on campus. I decided to kick it up a notch and wear a dress and make-up and to shave my legs. For this I won an award for the "Most Enthusiastic Walker." I received a medal and a $25 gift card. I also raised about $75 for the cause. It was a good time, except that I now have multiple blisters on the top of my toes from those *%#@!! shoes!! I think they had us wear those shoes to raise our awareness of the violence that is constantly perpetrated against women's feet. Women of the world, rebel! Don't wear stupid shoes that aren't functional and comfortable! By the way, the guy on the left is Mark, one of the grad students I supervise. He's a very good therapist.

China Wall in the Early Spring

I went for a hike yesterday with my friend Susan. I had been on this trail before, but this time much of it was covered with sometimes thigh-deep snow. No one had gone on this trail--besides deer and mountain lions, apparently--since at least the last snow. In fact, we ended up turning back after 4 hours for fear that we wouldn't be able to make it through one part where the trail was completely obscured for about a hundred yards, with no continuing trail in sight on the other side. It was probably the best hike I've been on ever, especially in terms of adventure. There were times when it wasn't perfectly clear whether the snow was obscuring my death in the form of a hidden crack in edge of the cliff. I knew from my hike there in the summer that there are several places where one wrong step would land you on the rocks 500 feet below.

Early Spring Hike

I went for a nice hike on Sunday up the Wind Caves trail. It had been a while since I went on a hike and I had forgotten how nice it is to be in the mountains. I guess I'm going to have to do it more regularly now, especially given the much nicer weather we've been having.
